MarsQuest

MarsQuest traces Mars history from the various War God forms given by different cultures to the infamous "canals" which led to science fiction stories about Martians. We hear excerpts from H. G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Striking photos of Mars of our time -- as seen in the night sky through binoculars and telescopes, and from our Mars explorations-- will captivate your students. We compare the climate and terrain of Earth and Mars, and present the current thinking about the rationale for future exploration.

A NASA JPL ambassador will also present the most recent information about the Red Planet as seen by the "eyes' of the new Mars landers.

Science Education Content

The focus of MarsQuest is to present Mars via a set of multidisciplinary themes. These ideas are woven throughout the program and help relate the information presented in the show to the lives of students, families, and the general public. Show content is relevant in the following subject areas:

  • Physical Science
  • Earth and Space Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Science and Technology
  • History of Science/Science as a Human Endeavor

Mars Adventure!

Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame will give your students a close up look at the planet Mars as well as our future on the Red Planet in our planetarium. Students will be able to plot the path of the red planet and locate it in our night sky as well as other seasonal constellations. In the second hour your class will go to lego lab and build Mars Rovers which will run on our 10 foot Mars landscape tables. Bus scholarships are available and this program supports the new science standards for students in grades 5-12. Program content is adjusted to be appropriate for the grade level in attendance. Book now for this adventure to the red planet.

Drake Planetarium and Science Center offers a unique opportunity for students to learn more about our closest planetary neighbor through a 2-part field trip at our facility. One hour will be devoted to the study of Mars in our 70-seat planetarium, featuring the MarsQuest program. An additional hour and a half will be reserved for the hands-on creation of individual rovers in our Mars Rover LEGO lab.
