Norwood Students Take Top Honors in Roller Coaster Design Contest!

King’s Island held their annual Roller Coaster Building Contest on May 14, 2010 as part of their Math & Science Day. Educators from all over the Tri-State were invited to form teams of 6 students each and bring them to compete in this one-of-a-kind program.

Drake Planetarium and Science Center accepted this challenge and brought a team of Middle School students and High School students. Fifteen schools were in the competition and Norwood students topped three of the divisions!

Junior Nick Taylor from Norwood High School won 2 categories at the competition with his coaster, "FireStorm". Fellow NHS student Brandon Grosse also participated in this contest.  In the Middle School division, the coaster "StormRaider", created by Norwood Middle School students Mack and Will McGuire, also won a division at the contest. Luke Shephard, Scotty Browning, Tracy Borgemenke, and Sara Sparks also had rollercoaster entries in the contest.

Jeff Gramke, the rollercoaster designer who created Kings Island’s “The Beast”, who has been judging the contest for the past 22 years states, “We look for rides that would work,” Gramke said. “How would this ride function if it were real?” Judges also took the creativity of the designs into account.

Congratulations to all participants!
